Joanne Chory, Princess of Asturias Laureate for Technical and Scientific Research, has died
Joint Laureate in 2019, together with Sandra Myrna Díaz, for “their pioneering contributions to our knowledge of plant biology, which are crucial in the fight against climate change and in the defence of biodiversity”
Joanne Chory, 2019 Princess of Asturias Laureate for Technical and Scientific Research together with Sandra Myrna Díaz, has died.
The Jury decided to bestow the Award on Joanne Chory for her: “pioneering contributions to our knowledge of plant biology, which are crucial in the fight against climate change and in the defence of biodiversity. The work of Joanne Chory on the molecular and genetic responses of plants to environmental variations, particularly light and temperature, help to understand and improve the adaptation of natural systems to global warming.”
The Jury was chaired by Pedro Miguel Echenique Landiríbar and made up of Jesús del Álamo, Juan Luis Arsuaga Ferreras, Alicia Asín Pérez, César Cernuda Rego, Juan Ignacio Cirac Sasturáin, Miguel Delibes de Castro, Elena García Armada, Clara Grima Ruiz, Amador Menéndez Velázquez, Sir Salvador Moncada, Ginés Morata Pérez, Enrique Moreno González, Adriana Ocampo Uría, Peregrina Quintela Estévez, Inés Rodríguez Hidalgo, Manuel Toharia Cortés, María Vallet Regí and with Santiago García Granda (as acting secretary).
The Awards Ceremony, which took place on 18th October, was presided over by HM King Felipe VI. Besides the address by His Majesty, the speeches at the ceremony were given by HRH The Princess of Asturias, Sandra Myrna Díaz, Siri Hustvedt, Salman Khan, Javier Solana, on behalf of the Prado Museum, and Luis Fernández-Vega Sanz, then President of the Princess of Asturias Foundation.
