John H. Elliott, Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, has died
He was bestowed with the Award in 1996 for “his research into the history of Spain, which he has successfully fitted into the European and American framework”
John H. Elliott, 1996 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, has died.
As stated in the Minutes of the Jury that granted the Award, John H. Elliott was a: “master Hispanist, recognised internationally for his research into the history of Spain, which he has successfully fitted into the European and American framework. He has contributed to the knowledge of Spanish History abroad, shattering clichés and stereotypes of decisive aspects of Spain´s past. Outstanding among his works are his great book on 17th century Catalonia, his careful studies into Imperial Spain and the very well-known biography of the Count-duke of Olivares, wherein he has become known for the equanimity of his approaches, for his meticulousness in the consultation of sources and for his clarity in the explanation of results.”
The Jury was chaired by Manuel Fraga Iribarne and was made up of Gonzalo Anes y Álvarez de Castrillón, Jaime García Añoveros, Manuel Jesús González, María del Carmen Iglesias, Víctor Mendoza Oliván, Aurelio Menéndez Menéndez, Manuel Menéndez Menéndez, Victoria Rodríguez Escudero, Pedro Schwartz Girón, Gabriel Tortella Casares, Juan Urrutia Elejalde and José López-Muñiz y González-Madroño, as acting secretary.
The Awards Ceremony, which took place on 8th November was presided over by HM King Felipe VI, then Prince of Asturias. Besides the address by His Majesty, the speeches at the ceremony were given by Adolfo Suárez, Helmut Kohl, Julián Marías, Francisco Umbral, Cecilia Rodrigo —on behalf of his father, Joaquín Rodrigo— and the then president of the Foundation José Ramón Álvarez Rendueles.
