Programme of cultural events marking the presentation of the 2023 Princess of Asturias Awards

The Princess of Asturias Foundation has put together a broad-ranging programme comprising 111 cultural activities to mark the forty-third edition of the Princess of Asturias Awards. Entitled “Awards Week”, the programme will take place between 10th and 20th October and will commence with the screening of the film Mamma Mia! on 10th October in Porrúa, preceded by a brief musical performance.
In addition to the Foundation’s commitment to the rural world, the choice of Porrúa is motivated by the upcoming coming of age of Her Royal Highness The Princess of Asturias, born in 2005, the year in which this village in to the Borough of Llanes received the Exemplary Town of Asturias Award granted by this institution.

The opening ceremony of the “Murakami on the Shore” programme, in the Tabacalera Building, in Gijón, will start at 8:00pm on the 11th (doors will open at 7:30pm). The doors for the permanent installations at La Vega Arms Factory in Oviedo will open at 11:00am on 12th.

Registration for the activities to be held between 11th and 15th October will open at 10:00am on Saturday 7th. Registration for the remaining events will open at 10:00am on 14th October. To visit the permanent installations at the Tabacalera and the Factory, you will need to fill out the corresponding registration form, which will be made available on the Foundation’s website.
This year’s cultural events will be held in Avilés, Gijón, La Fresneda (Siero), Mieres, Oviedo and Porrúa (Llanes). Since 1996, the Foundation has scheduled different activities in diverse locations in Asturias aimed at making the Laureates and their contributions to the world of science, culture or any other field in which they work better known to society at large.
The Laureates will participate in meetings with the public, meetings with experts in their respective fields and activities with pupils from various schools in Asturias.

The “Taking the Floor” cultural programme for schools is now in its sixth year. Since its launch in March 2015 up until the 2022 edition, the programme has registered more than 33 000 participations by primary, secondary, baccalaureate and vocational training students from 71 schools in the Principality of Asturias. The present initiative comprises nine activities that seek to make the merits and professional careers of the Laureates better known to the educational community.

This cycle of activities, corresponding to the forty-third edition of the Princess of Asturias Awards, has counted on the institutional collaboration of Spain’s Ministry of the Presidency, Relations with Parliament and Democratic Memory, the Ministry of Defence, the Principality of Asturias Regional Government, the Principality of Asturias Regional Parliament, Oviedo and Gijón City Councils, the University of Oviedo and the Cajastur Foundation.
