The Princess of Asturias Foundation has put together a broad-ranging programme of 60 cultural activities to mark the forty-first edition of the Princess of Asturias Awards. Under the name of “Awards Week”, the programme will take place between 14th and 23rd October and will commence with the opening of the permanent facilities at the former La Vega Arms Factory, Oviedo, at 7:30pm on the 14th.

Registration for the activities that are to take place between 14th and 17th will open at 12 noon on Monday 11th October. Those wishing to do so may also register at that time for two meetings between the public and laureates Katalin Karikó, Drew Weissman, Philip Felgner and Derrick Rossi (to be held on Wednesday 20th October) and Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci (an event that will take place on Saturday 23rd October).

Registration for the remaining activities, including the final rehearsal for the 29th Princess of Asturias Awards Concert, will open at 12 noon on Saturday 16th October.

This year’s cultural events will be held in Avilés, Gijón, Mieres, Oviedo and Riañu. Since 1996, the Foundation has scheduled different activities in diverse locations in Asturias aimed at making the Laureates and their contributions to the world of science, culture or any other field in which they work better known to society at large. Last year, activities were concentrated in Oviedo due to the public health situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Within the framework of “Awards Week”, the Laureates will take part in meetings with the public and students from several schools in Asturias.

The “Taking the Floor” cultural programme for schools is now in its sixth year. In all, some 3,906 primary, secondary, pre-university and vocational training students from 71 schools in the Principality of Asturias have participated in this year’s edition to date. This initiative consists of eight activities that seek to make the merits and careers of the Laureates in the categories of Sports (Teresa Perales), International Cooperation (CAMFED - Campaign for Female Education), Communication and Humanities (Gloria Steinem), Concord (José Andrés and the World Central Kitchen NGO) and Technical and Scientific Research (Katalin Karikó, Drew Weissman, Philip Felgner, Uğur Şahin, Özlem Türeci, Derrick Rossi and Sarah Gilbert) better known to the educational community. Last year, the “Taking the Floor” cultural programme for schools was suspended due to the public health situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spain’s Ministry of the Presidency, Relations with Parliament and Democratic Memory, the Ministry of Defence, the Regional Ministry of Culture, Language Policies and Tourism of the Principality of Asturias, the Principality of Asturias Regional Parliament, Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés and Mieres Municipal Councils, the University of Oviedo and the Spanish Paralympic Committee have all collaborated in the organization of this series of events marking the forty-first edition of the Princess of Asturias Awards.
