The members of the Jury for the 1984 Prince of Asturias Award for Communications and Humanities, José María Armero, Gustavo Bueno, Jaime Campmany, Juan Luis Cebrián, Antonio Garrigues y Díaz Cañabate, Manuel Martín Ferrand, Salvador Pániker, Francisco Pinto Balsemao, Pedro Rodríguez, Xavier Rubert de Ventós and Juan Tomás de Salas, gathered in Oviedo on the 24th and 25th of May, 1984, under the presidency of Pedro de Silva Cienfuegos-Jovellanos and with Faustino González Alcalde acting as secretary, have decided by majority to grant this award to Claudio Sánchez Albornoz, for an exemplary life completely dedicated to the service of Spain and the Spaniards, from his intellectual commitment to politics. His passion for the scientific knowledge of history and his activity as a public figure are inseparable. His vision, the result of long years of work and dedicated study, is an unavoidable point of reference in the definition of Spain. His complete humanism led him to be the teacher of various generations and many Latin-American countries, and highlights his universal character as a thinker and as a person.
