The members of the Jury for the 1986 Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research, Mario Corino de Andrade, Francisco Grande Coiván, José Antonio Jiménez-Salas, Fernando Lozano, Alberto Marcos Vallaure, Federico Mayor Zaragoza, Francisco Michavilla Pitarch, Juan Oró, Benjamín Rodríguez González and Julio Rodríguez Villanueva, gathered in Oviedo on the 1st and 2nd of May, 1986, under the presidency of Severo Ochoa and with José Antonio Martínez acting as secretary, have decided unanimously to grant this award to Professor Antonio González González of the University of La Laguna, founder of the Organic Natural Products Institute of the Higher Council for Scientific Research, in recognition of his life-long work of intense dedication to the field of natural products chemistry. He has identified a large number of marine organism and plant metabolic compounds, carrying out studies into their biogenesis, chemical synthesis and biological role. Professor González has created a school whose work has international repercussions, especially in the Latin-American world.
