Salamanca and Coimbra Universities

Assembled together in Oviedo, the 1986 Prince of Asturias Award Jury for Latin-American Cooperation*, comprised D. Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo, D. Jaime Carvajal y Urquijo, D. Manuel Díaz Ron, D. Manuel Díez Alegría, D. Obdulio Fernández, D.Martín González del Valle, D. Enrique de la Mata, D. Pascual Maragall, D. Manuel Olivencia, D. Francisco Pinto Balsemao, D. José Prat, D. Miquel Roca, D. Juan Antonio Samaranch, D. Fernando Suárez, D. Luis Yáñez-Barnuevo, presided over by D. Antonio Ramalho Eanes and with Teodoro López-Cuesta Egocheaga acting as secretary, has decided to grant the 1986 Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation to Salamanca and Coimbra Universities. When taking its decision, the Jury considered the extraordinary contribution that both universities have made to forming the spirit of all the countries belonging to the Latin American Community, and their longstanding dialogue with the universities of the Americas, which made the Atlantic into a mare nostrum of world culture.
