Juan José Linz Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences 1987
The members of the Jury for the 1987 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, Álvaro Cuervo, Antonio Domínguez Ortíz, Angel Fernández Noriega, Fernando García de Cortázar, Eduardo García de Enterria, Salvador Giner, Alfredo Lafita, Landelino Lavilla, José López-Muñiz y Gonzalez Madroño, Aurelio Menéndez, Gregorio Peces-Barba, José Luis Pinillos, Alejandro Rebollo and Carlos Seco Serrano, gathered in Oviedo on the 23rd and 24th of April, 1987, under the presidency of Joaquín Ruiz-Giménez and with Rodrigo Uría acting as secretary, have decided by majority to grant this award to Juan José Linz Storch de Gracia, for his important contribution to contemporary political sociology.Professor Linz´s work covers, among other fields, the study of the working and stability of democracies, authoritarian and fascist regimes, transition to democracy, electoral attitudes and political parties. His research has had a major international impact and have influenced the progress of social sciences, and his teaching work has been decisive for the progress made nowadays by sociology in Latin-American countries.
