Miguel Artola Gallego Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences 1991

The Jury for the 1991 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, comprising Pío Cabanillas Gallas, Victoria Camps, Joaquín Estefanía, Angel Fernández Noriega, Manuel Fraga Iribarne, Luis González Seara, Juan Luis Iglesias Prada, Luis Martínez Noval, Victor Mendoza Oliván, Raúl Morodo, Victor Pérez Díaz, gathered in Oviedo under the presidency of Enrique Fuentes Quintana and with Jose López-Muñiz y González-Madroño acting as secretary, have decided by majority to grant the 1991 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences to Miguel Artola Gallego. In bestowing the 1991 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences on Professor Artola, the jury wishes to highlight his exemplary vocation to historical research and teaching regarding questions and episodes of basic importance to the formation of contemporary Spain. His research work has shed light upon the extended, dramatic period from the Ancien Regime to our days, offering a vision of the whole which combines analysis of the institutions and an understanding of underlying social and political realities.

The work and career of Miguel Artola is the reward for a life dedicated to historiography and a testimony to the intellectual passion for understanding and helping us to understand our historical reality.
