The Jury for the 1993 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, comprising Sol Bacharach de Valera, Manuel Castells Oliván, Íñigo Cavero Lataillade, Manuel Clavero Arévalo, Álvaro Cuervo García, Ángel Fernández Noriega, Jaime García Añoveros, María del Carmen Iglesias, Julio Iglesias de Ussel y Ordis, and Víctor Pérez Díaz, gathered in Oviedo under the presidency of Manuel Fraga Iribarne and with José López-Muñiz y González-Madroño acting as secretary, have agreed to grant the 1993 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences to Silvio Zavala, for his continued and profound work of research, for his intense teaching work, for his studies into and publications on the history of colonial Mexico, and for his constant concern with integrating and fitting the Spanish-American field into the framework of universal influences.

Of his wide range of works, the following books are outstanding: "La defensa de los derechos del hombre en América Latina" and "El mundo americano en la epoca colonial". Likewise, his presence in cultural and scientific academic forums in Europa and America have made this historian into a prestigious figure to whom the Jury have decided unanimously to grant this year´s Award.
