The Jury for the 1994 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, comprising Íñigo Cavero Lataillade, Jaime García Añoveros, Eduardo García de Enterría, Manuel Jesús González, María del Carmen Iglesias, Sebastián Martín-Retortillo, Gregorio Peces-Barba, Victor Pérez Díaz, Manuel Sampedro, Pedro Schwartz, Juan Velarde- Fuertes and José Luis Yuste, gathered in Oviedo under the presidency of Manuel Fraga Iribarne and with José López- Muñiz y González-Madroño acting as secretary, wish to make clear, firstly, their satisfaction with the great number of entries for this year´s award, and their remarkable quality, vouched for by figures and institutions from different countries in the Latin-American community of nations.

After long debate and six rounds of votes, they have unanimously agreed to name Aurelio Menéndez Menéndez as winner of the 1994 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences.

For this award they have taken into account the extraordinary academic personality of Professor Menéndez, his indisputable position as the master of Economic and Mercantile Law, wherein he has carried on the high tradition of the modern Spanish school of Mercantile Law, and also his generous, fruitful work in the public service.

The Jury would also single out the finalist, Fernando Sáinz de Bujanda, founder of the modern Spanish school of Finance Law.
