The Jury for the 1994 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports, comprising Vicente Álvarez Areces, HRH Princess Pilar de Borbón, Duchess of Badajoz, Ángel Mario Carreño Rodríguez-Maribona, José María Casanovas, Rafael Cortés Elvira, Julio Díaz Corveiras, Julián García Candau, Juan Manuel Gozalo, JoÆo Havelange, Luís Infante Bravo, Herminio Menéndez, Santiago Nolla Zayas, Matías Prats and José Luis Vilaseca i Guasch, gathered in Oviedo under the presidency of Juan Antonio Saramanch, Marquis of Saramanch and with José María García acting as secretary have agreed by majority to grant the 1994 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports to Martina Navratilova, the legendary tennis champion who, with eighteen grand slam titles, has been at the forefront of world tennis for more than a decade.

Likewise, she has stood out for humanitarian work, especially the creation of a Child Aid Foundation.
