Spanish Marathon Team Prince of Asturias Award for Sports 1997
At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 1997 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports, made up of Vicente Álvarez Areces, José Joaquín Brotons, Ángel Mario Carreño Rodriguez-Maribona, José María Casanovas, José Angel Castro, Miguel Angel Escamilla, Carlos Ferrer Salat, Julián García Candau, Luis Infante Bravo, Miguel Indurain, María del Carmen Izquierdo, Pedro Antonio Martín, Herminio Menéndez, Pedro Muñiz García, Santiago Nolla Zayas, Matías Prats Luque, José Luis Vilaseca i Guasch, Olga Viza, chaired by Juan Antonio Samarach and with José María Garcia acting as secretary, has decided by majority vote to confer the 1997 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports on the Spanish marathon team, winner of the 1997 World Cup.
In granting the Award, the Jury has prized the international standing of these athletes who have successively won the 1994 European Championship (first, second and third places), the 1995 World Cup (Martín Fiz), the 1997 World Cup (Abel Antón) and the 1997 World Cup, where Ábel Antón finished first, Martín Fiz second, Fabián Roncero sixth and José Manuel García fifteenth.
