Raymond Carr Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences 1999

The Jury for the 1999 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, convened in Oviedo, comprised of Mr. Pío Cabanillas Alonso, Mr. Íñigo Cavero Lataillade, Mr. Manuel Jesús González, Mr. Luis González Seara, Ms. María del Carmen Iglesias, Mr. José María Mas Millet, Mr. Aurelio Menéndez, Mr. Manuel Menéndez Menéndez, Mr. José Manuel Otero Novas, Ms. Victoria Rodríguez Escudero, Mr. Ramón Tamames, chaired by Mr. Manuel Fraga Iribarne, with Mr. José López-Muñiz y González-Madroño as secretary, has decided unanimously to grant the 1999 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences to Professor Raymond Carr, Professor at Oxford University. Professor Carr is widely acclaimed in the British and Latin American academic milieu. His international acclaim goes hand in hand with the excellence of his works. Throughout his long scientific career, he has combined teaching and research. His works on the 19th and 20th century history of Spain shed new light on studies of contemporary modernisation. His book, "Spain 1808-1975", or his studies on the Republic and the Civil War have become models for research.

In this and other later publications he has provided an overall vision of contemporary history, which has helped to set Spanish history in a European context and has made an outstanding contribution to a greater understanding of both the Civil War and the transition towards democracy.

Such merits have warranted him being honoured with such prestigious distinctions as the "Gran Cruz de Alfonso X el Sabio" (the Great Cross of Alfonso X, the Wise) and a knighthood from the Queen of England. He was principal of St. Antony´s College and is a member of the Royal British Academy.
