Anthony Giddens

Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences 2002

The jury for the Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences 2002, convened in Oviedo, comprising D. Gonzalo Anes, D. Agustín Antuña, D. Manuel Azpilicueta, D. Raúl Bocanegra Sierra, D. Íñigo Cavero Lataillade, D. Álvaro Cuervo, D. Eugenio Domingo Solans, D. Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros, D. Eduardo García de Enterría, D. Manuel Jesús González, D. Luis González Seara, D. Juan Iranzo Martín, D. Rafael Jiménez de Parga, D. Aurelio Menéndez Menéndez, D. José Manuel Otero Novas, D. Juan Velarde Fuertes, chaired by D. Manuel Fraga Iribarne and with D. José López-Muñiz as secretary, have unanimously agreed to bestow the 2002 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences to Professor Anthony Giddens, director of the London School of Economics and Political Science.

The Jury wishes to recognise the long-standing contributions of Anthony Giddens to our knowledge of, and to the development of, the structures of advanced societies, and to our awareness of the consequences of modernity and the roles of classes and elites in the welfare society. The Jury would also like to highlight Giddens´ contribution to the debate and renewal of political ideas through his reconciling of the demands of the international market place and social problems, founded upon new approaches and democratic conduct.
