The jury for the Prince of Asturias Award for Concord 2002, convened in Oviedo, comprising D. Gabino de Lorenzo, D.ª Paz Fernández Felgueroso, D. José Ramón Álvarez Rendueles, D. Adolfo Barthe Aza, D. Claudio Boada, D. Jaime Carvajal y Urquijo, marqués de Isasi, D. José Celma Prieto, D. Ramón Colao Caicoya, D. Juan Manuel Desvalls, marqués del Poal, D. José Esteve, D. Martín Eyries Valmaseda, D. José Ramón Fernández Cuevas, D. Martín González del Valle, barón de Grado, D. Juan de Herrera, marqués de Viesca de la Sierra, D. Guillermo Luca de Tena, D. Elías Masaveu, D. José Luis Méndez López, D. Miguel Ángel Pesquera, D. Rafael del Pino Moreno, D. Matías Rodríguez Inciarte, D. José Antonio Rumeu, D. Luis Manuel Tejuca, D. Santiago de Ybarra, D. Santiago Zaldumbide Viadas, chaired by Vicente Álvarez Areces and with D. Pedro de Silva Cienfugos-Jovellanos as secretary, agree to bestow the 2002 Prince of Asturias Award for Concord to Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said who, apart from their outstanding artistic and academic careers, have worked selflessly and praiseworthily to promote coexistence and peace. This is symbolised in the joint efforts of young musicians who have overcome time-honoured antagonisms to encourage dialogue and reflection.
