The Jury for the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports 2003, convened in Oviedo, comprising D. José Ángel de la Casa, D. Juan Antonio Corbalán, D. José María Coto López, D.ª María Escario, D. Enrique Franco, D. Julián García Candau, D. Juan Antonio Gómez Angulo, D. Daniel Gutiérrez Granda, D. Luis Infante Bravo, D.ª María del Carmen Izquierdo, D. Antonio Lobato, D. Carlos Martínez de Campos y Carulla, D. Antonio Masip, D. Matías Prats, D. Nemesio Rodríguez López, D. Juan Antonio Samaranch Salisachs, D.ª Arancha Sánchez Vicario, D. José Javier Santos, D. Iñaki Urdangarín, duke of Palma de Mallorca, D. José Luis Vilaseca i Guasch, D. ª Emma Villacieros, D.ª Olga Viza, chaired by D. Miguel Indurain and with D. Ignacio Martínez acting as secretary, have agreed to bestow the Prince of Asturias Award Sports on the Tour de France.

The Tour is one of the world's major sporting events, and has symbolised the grandeur of cycling for one hundred years. From its very inception it has embodied the noblest of values: individual endeavour, teamwork and the will to excel. It has forged sportsmen of legend who continue to live on in our collective memory.

Furthermore, the Tour de France has made an extraordinarily important contribution to encouraging, popularising and bettering sport.
