Google Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities 2008
At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 2008 Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, made up of Mr. José Antonio Álvarez Gundín, Mr. Emilio Cassinello, Mr. Alejandro Echevarría, Mr. Javier Gómez Cuesta, Mr. Javier González Ferrari, Mr. Álex Grijelmo, Mr. José Luis Gutiérrez, Mr. Miguel Ángel Liso, Mr. Manuel Lombardero, Mr. Ramón López Vilas, Ms. Catalina Luca de Tena, Mr. Hans Meinke, Ms. Ana Rosa Migoya, Mr. Jaime Montalvo Correa, Ms. Rosa Montero, Ms. Beatriz de Moura, Mr. Pedro Páramo, Mr. José Luis Pardos, Mr. Alberto Pico, Mr. José Antonio Sánchez, Mr. Ricardo Senabre, Mr. Jesús de la Serna, Mr. Enrique Ybarra, chaired by Mr. Manuel Olivencia and with Mr. Juan Luis Iglesias Prada as secretary, has decided to bestow the 2008 Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities to the Internet search engine Google, created by Sergey Brin and Larry Page.
By instantly and selectively making the enormous flood of information on the Internet available to hundreds of millions of people, Google has -in barely a decade- facilitated a gigantic cultural revolution, bringing about widespread access to knowledge. Google has thus contributed in a decisive way to the progress of mankind, overcoming ideological, economic, linguistic or racial frontiers.
