At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 2009 Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, made up of Mr. José Antonio Álvarez Gundín, Mr. Alejandro Echevarría, Mr. Javier Gómez Cuesta, Mr. Javier González Ferrari, Mr. Álex Grijelmo, Mr. José Luis Gutiérrez, Mr. Daniel Innerarity, Mr. Miguel Ángel Liso, Mr. Manuel Lombardero, Mr. Ramón López Vilas, Ms. Catalina Luca de Tena, Mr. Francisco Luzón, Mr. Hans Meinke, Ms. Ana Rosa Migoya, Mr. Jaime Montalvo Correa, Ms. Beatriz de Moura, Mr. Pedro Páramo, Mr. José Luis Pardos, Mr. José Ramón Pérez Ornia, Mr. Alberto Pico, Mr. José Antonio Sánchez, Mr. Jesús de la Serna, Mr. Enrique Ybarra, chaired by Mr. Ricardo Senabre and with Mr. Juan Luis Iglesias acting as secretary, has decided to confer the 2009 Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities on the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

Throughout the hundred years of its existence, the National Autonomous University of Mexico has been the academic and educational model for numerous generations of students from diverse countries and has provided the Ibero-American sphere with the most eminent intellectuals and scientists. The National Autonomous University of Mexico, which generously gave refuge to illustrious personalities in exile from post-war Spain, has fostered powerful currents of humanistic, liberal and democratic thought in America and has extended its decisive influence by creating an extraordinary variety of institutions that broaden the academic world and link it to the society they serve.
