Richard Serra

At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 2010 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, made up of Ms. Mercedes Álvarez, Ms. Lourdes Fernández, Mr. José Fernández-Velasco, Carlos Fitz-James Stuart Martínez de Irujo, Duke of Huescar, Mr. José Luis Garci, Mr. Jordi García Candau, Ms. Rosina Gómez-Baeza, Mr. Emilio Marcos Vallaure, Mr. Hans Meinke, Mr. Miguel Muñiz, Mr. Benigno Pendás García, Ms. Amelia Valcárcel, chaired by Mr. José Lladó Fernández-Urrutia and with Mr. José Antonio Caicoya acting as secretary, has decided to confer the 2010 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts on the American sculptor Richard Serra for his audacity in structuring –from his minimalist perspective– the most significant spaces at an international scale through works of great visual power that are an invitation to reflection and wonder. With strong links to the best tradition of European art throughout his brilliant career, Serra is a multifaceted artist whose universal stature is expressed in forceful forms and suggestive concepts.
