Riccardo Muti Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts 2011
At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 2011 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, made up of Ms. Mercedes Álvarez González, Carlos Fitz-James Stuart Martínez de Irujo, Duke of Huéscar, Mr. Guillermo García-Alcalde Fernández, Ms. Rosina Gómez-Baeza Tinturé, Mr. Juan Carlos Laviana Díaz, Mr. Emilio Marcos Vallaure, Mr. Hans Meinke Paege, Mr. Miguel Muñiz de las Cuevas, Mr. Benigno Pendás García, Mr. Mariano Puig Planas, Ms. Benedetta Tagliabue, Ms. Amelia Valcárcel Bernaldo de Quirós, chaired by Mr. José Lladó Fernández-Urrutia and with Mr. José Antonio Caicoya Cores acting as secretary, has decided to confer the 2011 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts on the Italian maestro Riccardo Muti for his career of universal scope linked to the world’s leading theatres. Recognised for his vocation as a researcher and his humanistic background, Muti honours the classical tradition of the conductor capable of extracting the spirit of each work through the best qualities of orchestras, thereby managing to transmit to the public music’s timeless message.
