Annie Leibovitz Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities 2013
At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 2013 Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, made up of Mr José Antonio Álvarez Gundín, Mr Juan Barja de Quiroga Losada, Ms Adela Cortina Orts, Mr Diego Carcedo, Mr Albert Espinosa Puig, Mr Javier Garciadiego Dantán, Mr Javier González Ferrari, Mr Miguel Ángel Liso Tejada, Mr Benigno Pendás García, Mr José Antonio Vera Gil, Mr Enrique de Ybarra e Ybarra, chaired by Mr Víctor García de la Concha and with Mr Román Suárez Blanco acting as secretary, has decided to confer the 2013 Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities on Annie Leibovitz.
One of the driving forces of world photojournalism, American Annie Leibovitz is one of the most highly respected photographers in Europe and America. Following a period as a reporter that ended in the Lebanon War, her work has appeared on scores of covers of the most prestigious journals and she has achieved recognition for her snapshots and portraits which reflect an era of politics, literature, film, music and sport through its leading figures.
Leibovitz’s photographic work has been exhibited in the major galleries and museums of the world’s most emblematic cities. Nixon at the moment of leaving the White House, John Lennon hours before he was killed and the historical portrait of Queen Elizabeth II are only a small sample of her acclaimed graphic work.
