At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 2013 Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, composed of Mr Pedro Alonso Fernández, Mr Enrique Barón Crespo, Ms Eugenia Bieto Caubet, Ms Silvia Escobar Moreno, Mr Jorge de Esteban Alonso, Enrique Fernández-Miranda y Lozana, Duke of Fernández-Miranda, Ms Isabel Gómez-Acebo y Duque de Estrada, Ms Gloria Fernández-Lomana García, Mr Jerónimo López Martínez, Mr Ricardo Martí Fluxá, Mr Luis Javier Navarro Vigil, Mr Rafael Sánchez-Barriga Fernández, chaired by Mr Gustavo Suárez Pertierra and with Ms Alicia Castro Masaveu acting as secretary, has decided to confer the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation 2013 on the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science, a network of scientific research institutes that came into being in Europe in 1948 with a global vocation.

The centres making up the network perform basic research to the benefit of society in fields such as the Natural Sciences, the Social Sciences and the Humanities. The Max Planck Society encompasses multiple disciplines in areas such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Earth Sciences, among others, as well as projects related to climate research and international space missions.

The Jury has prized the European vocation of the Society, its interdisciplinary approach and the close cooperation among research centres and universities around the world with which the Max Planck network works, generating teams of highly qualified young scientists engaged in cutting-edge fields of research carried out worldwide.

The Max Planck Society operates under the ideals of excellence in scientific and technological research at a global scale.
