The New York City Marathon Prince of Asturias Award for Sports 2014

The New York City Marathon

Statement by Mary Wittenberg on the conferral of the 2014 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports to the New York City Marathon:

“On behalf of the staff at New York Road Runners, it is a great honor for the TCS New York City Marathon to receive the 2014 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports. We thank the jury members involved in the selection and The Prince of Asturias Foundation for recognizing the race and the people of New York City. For the nearly one million runners from around the world who have finished the New York City Marathon since it began in 1970, this is their award too. With the help of our New York City agency partners and the support of millions of New Yorkers throughout the five boroughs, the marathon has helped and inspired people from around the world to run for life.”

Statement by Abel Antón on the conferral of the 2014 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports to the New York City Marathon:

“The New York City Marathon got under way in the 70s with very few participants and has now become the most prestigious and most celebrated marathon race in the world. This award is well deserved, as it has a large number of participants as well as a high level of citizen involvement. The New York City Marathon has also become an example of pushing back the limits, in which every runner in the world wants to participate.”

Statement by Martín Fiz on the conferral of the 2014 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports to the New York City Marathon:

“It seems a difficult award to give because they are all worthy and I thought beforehand that Mireia Belmonte might be the winner, although I’m not surprised at all, because the New York City Marathon is a race that attracts thousands of participants year after year, going from just over 150 the first year to more than 50,000 nowadays. I would also like to think that this award is not only a tribute to the organization, but also to the thousands of anonymous athletes who save their money to be able to go and take part. I have been able to participate on numerous occasions, having achieved a personal best of fifth place, which is also the record for a Spaniard in this race”.

Statement by Alberto Juzdado on the conferral of the 2014 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports to the New York City Marathon:

“I still have the thorn in my side of never having run the New York City Marathon, one of the largest races in the world alongside London. It deserves the Award for its mixture of tradition, atmosphere and sporting spirit. I hope to run it at some time in the future, albeit as an amateur, hopefully accompanied by my daughter”.
