James Nachtwey

At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 2016 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, composed of Helen Aguirre Ferré, José Antonio Álvarez Gundín, Luis María Anson Oliart, Juan Barja de Quiroga Losada, Adela Cortina Orts, Silvia Elena Giorguli Saucedo, Javier González Ferrari, Miguel Ángel Liso Tejada, Ramón López Vilas, Patricio Lorente, Emilio Morenatti Fernández, Beatriz de Moura Gurgel, Benigno Pendás García, Diana Sorensen, José Antonio Vera Gil, Enrique de Ybarra e Ybarra, chaired by Víctor García de la Concha and with Alberto Anaut González acting as secretary, has decided to confer the 2016 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities on American photojournalist James Nachtwey.

Considered one of the best war photographers of recent decades, his professional commitment has led him to cover some thirty armed conflicts and humanitarian crises without renouncing the ethical principles of the reporter or adorning what the camera sees. As an insightful witness of human suffering, he has served as a guiding example for several generations of photojournalists worldwide.
