Amref Health Africa 2018 Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation
Joint statement by Githinji Gitahi and Álavaro Rengifo, on the conferral of the 2018 Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation to Amref Health Africa.
“It is an honour for the institution to receive this recognition, which rewards our work in the world of cooperation in Africa.
Our mission is to increase access to quality healthcare for communities in Africa through the strengthening of health human resources, the provision of health services and healthcare investment. Amref Health Africa has been promoting health from Africa and for Africans for more than 60 years. During that time, it has trained 12 million health professionals and has benefited 110 million African citizens via its programmes. For its part, the foundation in Spain, Amref Salud África, came into being just over 20 years ago, since when it has supported more than 175 projects that have benefited more than 6 million Africans in 9 countries.
Our goal is to achieve universal health coverage by 2030 in the African countries where we work. Recognitions like this bring us closer to that goal. We would like to take the opportunity to thank all the Spanish institutions and partners who have helped us in these 20 years in Spain and especially all those who have supported us via their endorsements of this nomination for the Princess of Asturias Awards.”
