Statement by Anne Carson, following the conferral of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Literature

"An astounding honour. An absolute surprise. Ever since I walked across Spain in 1983 (from France to Compostela) I have wondered at the culture of this people who do not smile unless there’s a very good reason. How gracious of you to suggest that I may have given you a reason.”
