At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 2023 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, composed of Abel Antón Rodrigo, Teresa Bernadas Porto, Gemma Castaño Vinyals, Cristina Cubero Alcalde, Joaquín Folch-Rusiñol Corachán, Juan Ignacio Gallardo Tomé, Patricia García Rodríguez, Vicente Jiménez Navas, Feliciano López Díaz-Guerra, Lluís Mascaró Serra, Guadalupe Porras Ayuso, Julián Redondo Pérez, Samuel Sánchez González, chaired by Teresa Perales Fernández and with Theresa Zabell Lucas acting as secretary, has unanimously decided to bestow the 2023 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports on Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge.
The Jury has valued the figure of the athlete as a role model in world athletics and as the best marathon runner of all time. Two-time Olympic champion and holder of the world record for the race, Kipchoge is the only man in history to have managed to run the 42.195 kilometres in under two hours, although this feat has not been officially recognized.
In addition to his successes as an athlete, he carries out meaningful social work through the foundation that bears his name, which is dedicated to facilitating access to early childhood education and protecting the environment.
