Statement by Marjane Satrapi on being granted the 2024 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities

“It is obviously a great honour and an immense pleasure to be the winner of this prize even if, without false modesty, I do not really know if what I have done for humanity is this notable. But since you, honorable members of the jury, had chosen me, I take this opportunity to celebrate the fierce fight of my people for human rights and freedom. Today it is all the young people who lost their lives and the ones who continue the combat for liberty in Iran that are celebrated.

I dedicate this prize to Toomaj Salehi, rap artist, sentenced to death a few days ago for singing the freedom.
