Background

momentos que hoy vive el mundo, en cuestiones tan
sensibles como la epidemia del ébola, las crisis migratorias
y, en general, la protección de las personas más
desfavorecidas y en riesgo de exclusión”.

The Hospitaller Order of St John of God
(HOSJG) is
an international organization that provides health and
social care to the needy. It was founded in Granada in
1593 by Juan Ciudad. The Order has maintained the
solidity of its services, in particular in palliative care.
It made a special effort during the Ebola epidemic
declared in several African countries in 2014, asking
for donations for their hospitals in Lunsar (Sierra
Leone) and Monrovia (Liberia) to provision isolation
areas and acquire materials. Part of their staff was
infected, with 18 brothers and co-workers dying there.
The HOSJG currently has 350 centres, more than 70
in 27 impoverished countries out of the 55 in which
it is present. It is also equipped to provide social and
healthcare services. It comprises over a thousand
brothers working alongside 55,000 professionals and
around 9,000 volunteers. It has more than 300,000
benefactors/donors, who lend economic aid through
individual, periodic or one-off donations or in the form
of legacies and bequests. In 2015, the Order received the
European Citizen’s Prize 2014 granted by the European
Parliament.
La Orden Hospitalaria de San Juan de Dios
es
una organización internacional que presta cuidados
sanitarios a los más necesitados. Fue fundada en
Granada en 1593 por Juan Ciudad. La Orden ha
mantenido la solidez de su servicio, realizando un
especial esfuerzo durante la epidemia del ébola
declarada en 2014, solicitando donaciones para sus
hospitales en Lunsar (Sierra Leona) y Monrovia (Liberia),
para la adecuación de las áreas de aislamiento y
la adquisición de materiales. Parte de su personal resultó
contagiado y fallecieron 18 hermanos y colaboradores.
Actualmente, la OHSJD cuenta con 350 centros, más
de 70 en 27 países empobrecidos de los 55 en los que
está presente, y dispositivos sociales y sanitarios. Está
compuesta por más de mil hermanos que trabajan junto
a 55.000 profesionales y cerca de 9.000 voluntarios.
Cuenta con más de 300.000 benefactores-donantes,
que prestan su ayuda económica a través de donaciones
particulares, periódicas o puntuales, y en forma
de legados y herencias. En 2015 recibió el Premio
Ciudadano Europeo 2014, que otorga el Parlamento
Europeo.
